Beyond the Technology: The education 4.0 podcast

Journal publishing models are changing rapidly, especially here in the UK. In this podcast we look at the pressing need for institutions to track the true cost of article processing charges (APCs) so they can manage their transition to open access from a position of authority and monitor their costs effectively.

Last week we were in London for the 2014 Times Higher Education Awards, which recognise and celebrate exceptional talent, dedication and innovation across the sector.

The Summer of Student Innovation showcase event took place on Wednesday 26 November at the University of Reading, and featured the 20 winning teams from the 2014 cohort. This podcast features interviews with some of the teams as they discuss their projects, and also includes comment from Jisc chief innovation officer Phil Richards and deputy chief innovation officer Andy McGregor, who oversees the competition.

Last week saw the launch of Digimap for Colleges - a secure, free and easy to use online mapping tool that supports further education institutions and staff, and aids students in their studies.

At this week's AoC Annual Conference in Birmingham, Heart of Worcestershire College won the Jisc-sponsored AoC Beacon Award for Effective Use of Technology in FE. Here, HoW ILT director Peter Kilcoyne talks about the complete blended learning model introduced by the college, how it has helped to create a culture where the use of online learning is expected and normal, and the way it has let the students develop independent and autonomous learning skills.

Through our assessment and feedback programme, we have been in discussion with people who are dealing with assessment and feedback issues on a daily basis. Not only has it helped everyone to get a clearer understanding of what might be going wrong, the institutions involved have started to develop processes and practices, enhanced by technology, which could be applied across the sector to benefit learners and teachers.

Jisc Monitor is a 12-month project exploring whether a user-centred, shared national service could potentially help institutions to manage their open access activity effectively. Find out how we are aiming to write a specification for a system that will support improved data gathering and efficient workflows, using open source software and codes.
